Selena (Deceased Bobcat)

Picturesource: web.archive.org
Selena was purchased for $160 on 6-6-95 from Patricia Bodenstedt, a Nebraska fur farm along with 16 other bobcats and Canadian Lynx the same day, many who were then sold.

USDA papers list the bobcats as Selena, Levi, Cloud Dancing, Crazy Horse, Apache, 2 Tiger Lilly's, one of several Cleo-Cat-Tras, Two Toes and 2 unnamed bobcats. Of these, 4 were sold. Of the 6 Canadian Lynx bought that day, 1 died, 4 were sold, and one named Picasso was also probably sold as he does not appear on her 1997 inventory.

Carole says, "Don had driven to Omaha Nebraska to purchase some Canadian Lynx kittens and wanted some bobcat kits as well....". They obviously purchased the lynx kittens to sell and sold 4 of the bobcat kittens as well.  If the intention was to rescue cats, they would have come home with the older cats about to be killed for their fur, not tiny kittens. Unless you believe that you purchase cats to sell them or raise them in your house and make pets of them, these 17 cats were not rescued.

The Evolving Stories

Wildlife On Easy Street 1997

"a female Bobcat born April 1995 came to us with her brother Levi and nine other Bobcats who were destined to become fur coats next year. Don learned of her fate through a slip of the tongue of the owner's son, when he commented what nice pelts they would make. She arrived in June of 1995 and was a little quicker to allow us to pet her, but like her brother she is not completely trusting of humans, and who could blame her?"

Wildlife On Easy Street 1999

"Selena came to Easy Street in June, 1995 with her brother, Levi, and nine other Bobcats who had been destined to become fur coats. These kittens were the best of the sixty kits that had been produced that year and were going to be skinned and the pelts exhibited at a trade show. She was a little quicker to allow us to pet her, but like her brother she is not completely trusting of humans, and who could blame her? She prefers the company of some of the more tame Bobcats who are frequently visited by tour guests, and she will look on with complete disdain as Apache and Divinity vie for the attention of their visitors."

Big Cat Rescue (present)

"Selena came to Big Cat Rescue in June, 1995 with her brother, Levi, and nine other Bobcats who had been destined to become fur coats. These kittens were the best of the sixty kits that had been produced that year and were going to be skinned and the pelts exhibited at a trade show. Selena is very shy despite the influence of her outgoing roommates; Divinity, Apache, and Takoma."
