Tobi
(Cougar)

Tobi is not to be confused with a cougar cub named Toby who came from Nancy Sue Mc Pherson of Ft Myers, Fl and was promptly sold to Sherry Frost of Tampa, Fl.

Tobi is one of a total of 10 cougars that came from Deepwoods Exotics of Oneida, TN on 8-18-95 including Lakota, Callie, Sugar, Shadow, Apache, and 4 tiny cubs. Most of these cats were quickly sold, but Tobi remained at BCR.

In 1995 a North Carolina man, Timothy Evans (case # 97-08896-B) was attacked by a South American cougar named Tobi and was severely bitten on his left forearm after Baskin irresponsibly invited him to pet the cat which she claimed was "tame and friendly."

Unless you believe that it is ethical to buy or claim that you have 'rescued' cats that you then turn around and sell, these 11 cats, Toby, Tobi, Lakota, Callie, Sugar, Shadow, Apache, and 4 unnamed cubs, were not rescued.

The Evolving Stories

Wildlife On Easy Street 1997

"Tobi came to Easy Street with Callie from Oneida on 8/18/95. Tobi is a very small and lovable cat, and is also very agile and active.  She loves to hide in the palmetto of her cat-a-tat until a person has just passed and then rushes out to surprise them from behind."

Big Cat Rescue 2006 (Fox medicine? Did Carole suffer a psychotic episode after being exposed by Bay News 9?)

"Tobi came to Big Cat Rescue from Oneida on 8/18/95. Tobi is a very small and secretive cat, and is also very agile and active. She loves to hide in the palmetto of her cat-a-tat until a person has just passed and then rushes out to surprise them from behind.  She learned her art of camouflage from the Fox.  Tobi shares her Fox medicine with us urging us to become like the wind, which is unseen and yet able to weave into and through any sitation.  She suggestes that we watch a person's actions more than listen to their words.  Fox medicine teaches the art of Oneness through her ability to use camouflage to become part of all of her surroundings."

Big Cat Rescue (present)

"She is the perfect example of why it never works out to make a pet of a wild cat.  In her case there was a husband and wife who had lots of money, larger than usual cages and who fed their cats a decent diet.

But all in the same month the wife became pregnant and the husband discovered that he was terminally ill. With two tigers and eight cougars as pets, where were they going to find forever homes for their animals?  We were able to take one tiger and all 8 cougars, but big rescues like that are very expensive and include taking on a lifetime commitment to the cats.  They did find another home for their male tiger, but good sanctuaries are all full and over flowing, so it is very rare that big cats can be rescued by places that don’t implode shortly thereafter.

Tobi is a very small and secretive cat, and is also very agile and active. She loves to hide in the palmetto of her cat-a-tat until a person has just passed and then rushes out to surprise them from behind. Tobi lives in an enclosure next to Hal, who is always vying for her attention."
